Step 1:
Check the Total Weight

Consider the combined weight of your:

Pot + Soil + Plant + Water

Remember, the weight can change considerably depending on the size of the pot, the type and volume of soil, and how much water the soil holds.

You can access our Pot Plant Weight Guide here.

As a general guide:

  • Up to 50 kg → choose a 50 kg Plant Glider
  • Up to 90 kg → choose a 90 kg Plant Glider
  • Over 90 kg → a single Plant Glider is not suitable. For pots with a large enough base, two 90 kg Plant Gliders may be positioned securely underneath the pot to provide a combined weight capacity of up to 180 kg, provided the weight is safely and evenly distributed across both Gliders.

If you're unsure of the total weight, choose the higher weight capacity.

Step 2:
Measure the Base of Your Pot

Measure the diameter of the bottom of your pot where it will sit on the Plant Glider.

The base measurement is important because pots come in many different shapes. Some have a wide base, while others have a narrow base and become much wider towards the top.

As a general guide:

Smaller pot base
→ A 30 cm Plant Glider may be suitable.

Around 40 cm base or wider
→ Choose the 40 cm Plant Glider for a larger supporting area.

Can my pot overhang the Plant Glider?

Yes. The pot does not necessarily need to sit completely within the outside edge of the Plant Glider.

Some overhang may be suitable depending on the:

  • Weight of the pot and plant
  • Shape of the pot
  • Width of the pot base
  • Height and size of the plant
  • Weight distribution
  • Surrounding environment

For example, a short, heavy and well-balanced pot may be suitable with some overhang, while a tall tree in a narrow-based pot may need a larger supporting area.

Title

Step 3:
Consider the Shape of Your Pot

Two pots with the same base diameter can behave very differently.

Pay particular attention to pots that are:

  • Narrow at the bottom and wide at the top
  • Tall and narrow
  • Top-heavy
  • Irregular or asymmetrical in shape

For example, a pot may have a 30 cm base, but if it becomes considerably wider towards the top, its weight may be distributed further outside the supporting area underneath.

In these situations, consider choosing the 40 cm Plant Glider to increase the supporting area or three rubber wedges to increase the pot's surface area..

Title

Step 4:
Consider the Size of Your Plant

The plant itself can have a significant effect on stability.

Consider its:

  • Height
  • Width
  • Canopy size
  • Weight
  • Weight distribution

A small plant in a heavy pot will generally behave differently to a tall tree or large leafy plant in the same pot.

Take extra care with:

Tall trees
The greater the height, the more leverage there can be above the pot.

Large canopies
Wide or dense foliage can make a plant more top-heavy and can catch more wind.

Uneven plants
Plants growing predominantly towards one side may create uneven weight distribution.

For taller or larger plants, consider using the 40 cm Plant Glider even if the pot base could fit on a smaller Glider. Adding three rubber wedges can also create a wider support surface area for taller plants.

Title

Step 5:
Think About Wind and Location

Where your Plant Glider will be used is also important.

A large or tall plant can act like a sail in the wind. The bigger the canopy, the more force the wind can place on the plant and pot.

Take extra care for:

  • Balconies
  • Exposed patios
  • Rooftops
  • Open courtyards
  • Windy gardens
  • Other exposed outdoor areas

A pot and plant that is stable in a sheltered area may behave differently when exposed to strong wind.

If your plant is tall or has a large canopy, choose a larger supporting area and consider whether the location is appropriate.

Title

Step 6:
Need More Stability?

If your pot or plant is tall, wide, top-heavy or requires additional support, there are two simple ways to increase stability.

Choose the 40cm Plant Glider

A larger Plant Glider provides a greater supporting area underneath the pot.

This can be particularly useful for:

  • Tall plants
  • Larger pots
  • Pots that widen towards the top
  • Plants with large canopies
  • Pots with some overhang

Add 3 Rubber Wedges

Rubber Wedges - available here - can be positioned evenly around the pot in three locations.

The wedges help provide additional support by increasing the surface area and help keep the pot securely positioned on the Plant Glider.

When a Plant Glider May Not Be Suitable

A Plant Glider may not be suitable if:

  • The combined pot, soil, plant and water exceed the capacity of the Plant Glider being used
  • The pot and plant combination is extremely top-heavy
  • The pot is inherently unstable or at high risk of tipping
  • The plant is extremely tall or has a very large canopy relative to the pot
  • The intended location exposes the plant to conditions that could make it unstable

For pots over 90 kg, only use two Plant Gliders where the pot base is large enough to sit securely and evenly across both Gliders.

When in doubt, prioritise the stability of the complete pot + plant combination, not just whether the pot physically fits on the Plant Glider.
